Q&A: Is California on its way to becoming the first Environmental Dictatorship?
May 18th
Question by Martin L: Is California on its way to becoming the first Environmental Dictatorship? From NCTimes.com:
California utilities would control the temperature of new homes and commercial buildings in emergencies with a radio-controlled thermostat, under a proposed state update to building energy efficiency standards.
Customers could not override the thermostats during “emergency events,” according to the proposal, part of a 236-page revision to building standards. The document is scheduled to be considered by the California Energy Commission, a state agency, on Jan. 30.
The description does not provide any exception for health or safety concerns. It also does not define what are “emergency More >
Q&A: I need a topic for my Urban Studies research paper?
May 18th
Question by zooey: I need a topic for my Urban Studies research paper? I have to think of a major problem that cities face today, then narrow it down to a specific problem in a specific city. It’s a three part project with three papers: a proposal, a historical analysis, and an advocacy essay. It has to be a problem that is not resolved yet. Preferably a U.S. city. I’ve thought of economic effects of immigration, rural flight/gentrification, poverty, homelessness, pollution, environmental problems, public transportation, but I can’t seem to narrow any of them down enough. Can anyone help?

Even minor dips in performance can significantly affect long term payback and return on investment. Across large commercial renewable energy systems, any inefficiency can lead to lower profitability in the long term. Ultimately, renewable energy is about efficiency. The only way to guarantee efficiency is to monitor it constantly with wind, solar thermal & solar PV monitoring.

May 18th
(PRWEB) April 09, 2012
Despite claims by environmentalists that small-scale suction dredge gold mining harms fish, it can actually improve fish habitat, scientists say.
Radical claims by some environmental groups in recent years have led to a suction dredging ban in California, while the practice remains legal in all other U.S. states.
The Gold Prospectors Association of America and land rights groups, such as Public Lands for the People and the Western Mining Alliance, have strongly opposed the ban.

What is the minimum number of species to be an “ecosystem?”?
May 18th
Question by water_skipper: What is the minimum number of species to be an “ecosystem?”? What is the minimum number of species to be an “ecosystem?” If I put a bunch of plants of just one species in an airtight greenhouse and they manage to survive, does that count as an “ecosystem?” What about one type of plant and one type of bug? Seriously though, are there any species that could survive alone like that? If not, what are the minimum number of species needed to survive indefinitely?
